Nitha Mauricette-Philip, is a Research Assistant at the Caribbean Research Center at the University of the West Indies, Cavehill. She was born in Anse- La- Raye, St Lucia. She is currently pursuing Doctoral Studies in Education. She holds a B Ed in Secondary Mathematics Education, Mona Campus, University of the West Indies, Jamaica and graduated with distinction with a M Ed in Mathematics from Lesley University, Cambridge MA, USA. She is also a Certified Business professional in the field of Project Management. Before joining the team at the Caribbean Research Center; Nitha was the Head of the Pre College/ University Unit at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, St Lucia. Nitha has been a Mathematics Educator for over 22 years, and a teacher trainer for over 15 years. Her Research Interests include: Mathematics Education, Testing, Measurement and Evaluation and Student Wellbeing.
Session Description
The session will explore the concept of wellbeing and its western expression as characterized by individualism and self-expression, which can be contrary to the cultural values of community and interdependence within the Caribbean. A review of wellbeing framed within the Caribbean environment will further be explored and an ensuing discussion on the preliminary literature review findings regarding the importance of wellbeing and its significance in the classroom educational context.
