About the presenter
Mrs. Paula Alleyne holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Project Management. Presently pursuing her PhD in Education, her area of research is on youth who left residential care in Barbados and their transition to independent living. One of the motivations behind her research is the lack of Caribbean literature surrounding this vulnerable community. She believes that research on behalf of those unable to speak for themselves assists both private and public sector policy makers in evidence-based decision making.
Mrs. Alleyne has worked with Persons with Disabilities, the mentally challenged, terminally ill and those in severe poverty for the past 15 years in her public sector capacity. Additionally, as Founder and Chairman of a non-profit organization, she assists those who previously and currently live in residential care.
Session Descriptions
The session will explore the concept of wellbeing and its western expression as characterized by individualism and self-expression, which can be contrary to the cultural values of community and interdependence within the Caribbean. A review of wellbeing framed within the Caribbean environment will further be explored and an ensuing discussion on the preliminary literature review findings regarding the importance of wellbeing and its significance in the classroom educational context.
